Citra Malaysia Brisbane 2011 started officially at 9 in the morning on the 22nd of October, as we sang “Negaraku”. Nothing beats the feeling of singing your national anthem on a foreign land, knowing you are surrounded by the ones who feel the same.

But little did most know that for some, Citra Malaysia started as early as 2 in the morning. While most of us were snoring in our own beds dreaming about how awesome Citra Malaysia is going to be, Mohd Shazwan and his dedicated committee members were wide awake at work, to make sure all those dreams come true. (wow)

I arrived at King George Square around 8, a place I knew at the back of my hand, having gone there too many times for my own good.  The place looked like it has never looked before, booths after booths lined up, a big stage just waiting to be used and familiar faces all around. Everyone was scrambling for their booths to be properly set up and decorated, while some were too busy buying as many raffle tickets as possible to win a flight ticket “balik kampung” sponsored by Malaysia Airlines.

Citra Malaysia vowed to bring one of the best performances you could ever have in Queensland, and they have truly carried out their promise.  The opening ceremony was like no other, a 3-in-1 performance portraying the three main Malaysian cultures, the Malay, Chinese and the Indians.

I remembered wondering why there was not a single male in the Silat performance, how cute it was that a “mat salleh” boy was acting out the lion dance and how graceful Shamimi Manikam was while performing her Indian dance. Then we had the opening dance by no other than our Malaysian Students Council of Australia dance troupe (MASCAT), who has been dancing their way into our hearts since 2009, founded by the marvelous Muhammad NorAmin bin Mohamed Farid.

As the crowd “ooh-ed” and “aah-ed” over the arrival of our so-called Malay bride and groom, Dena and Radzhlan, in their matching maroon “baju pengantin”, there was not a doubt in my mind that every single woman there felt like getting married right then and there. It was like a real live Malay wedding, where the “pengantin” were escorted to their “pelamin” by their two cheerful “pengapit”, Megat Shah and Nabilah.As Shazwan explained to our guest of honor, Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor, how a Malay wedding works, our bride and groom sat on their “pelamin” with wide smiles on their faces, as if it was really their wedding day.

After another Silat performance, we had our only solo of the day by Syafiq Hamidan. He sang “Zunika” on that stage all by himself, owning it. I wanted to stay and watch him sing but my stomach didn’t agree. It was making noises that only I understand, and I knew there was only one place I should go. I walked to the other side of King George Square, as my nose followed the smell I knew so well, and my legs brought me to the PappaRoti Australia booth.

PappaRoti is all about one thing, and one thing only, its signature crispy and fragrant coffee-coated cream bun over light and fluffy dough with a hint of buttery filing. With its $4 package of a bun and a can of soft drink, I could have stayed at the booth the whole day. But the show must go on, and I was then entertained by great vocals from Farhanah Jaafar as she sang Siti Nurhaliza’s Cindai, with the MASCA dance troupe performing alongside her.

My MASCA colleague, Chiang, then brought me to the Sate’ House booth, which Citra Malaysia had the privilege of getting every single item in the menu to be made out of “halal” meat exclusively for that day. The smell of authentic Malaysian food almost distracted me from the performance by our Malaysian rock stars of the day. All dressed in “baju melayu” and their bassist in “baju kurung”, the Dark Night kick started their performance with a Pink Floyd cover, but no one could ever forget their splendid cover of M. Nasir’s Mantera Semerah Padi, sang by Aiman Kamalul Ariffin few hours after.

Being one of the guests of honor of Citra Malaysia, I was then treated to a free lunch. As I devour the delicious “nasi briyani” and “ayam masak merah” under the black tent to hide from the scorching sun, I could hear DJ Sisi Azie covering Citra Malaysia out loud on Oh! Media.fm.

In anticipation of Citra Malaysia Brisbane, Oh! Media Network have also formed a crew who basically went around the whole day, conducting interviews from one person to another, collecting song requests and who made sure the event was aired live and clear on Oh! Media.fm, 6469.387 kilometers away.

By the time I finished my lunch, it was time for the performance from the MASCA theater troupe, the act I have been waiting to watch since morning. Lead by Rahmat Shazi, our very small troupe acted out a play titled the Asylum, a script originally written in Bahasa Malaysia by Associate Professor Dr. Shamsul Rahman Kutty. They had the crowd laughing as soon as Khairul Azfar, dressed in drag, uttered his first line. Yugeindran Nair then had the crowd double with laughter, as he did his stand-up comedy skit right after.

When all is said and done, Joget Lambak was truly the highlight of the day. Everyone was dancing happily to Siti Nurhaliza’s Joget Berhibur despite it was 4 in the evening even after such an early start to the day.

When the song stopped playing, no one moved. An Indian song came up, and they started dancing again straight away. It was such a nice sight to behold, when people from all cultural backgrounds danced together to one particular song, without a care in the world, without wanting the day to end.

I was one of those people and I would do it all over again if I could. And InsyaAllah, Citra Malaysia Brisbane would come back for the second time next year, all mighty and loud. It may be with different groups of people,showcasing different types of performances, but it would be the same old Malaysian spirit at heart.

A special shoutout to Mohd Shazwan, Ivan Tan, The Oh! Media Network Brisbane crew (Shy,Qissy,Afiqah), our MASCA Queensland chairperson, Mohammed Anas Amir who was the only one clad in batik that day, the rest of Citra committee members and volunteers. You guys have rocked Citra Malaysia Brisbane 2011, and most importantly, you guys rock my world. –Anis Lutfi
