General Information Regarding Transportation in Queensland

The Queensland Government has provided various efficient means of transport around Brisbane and Gold Coast, mainly by ferry known as the city cat, bus and train. Using a ‘Go Card’ and getting directions and status updates on the Translink website make travelling around Queensland easy.

What is a ‘go card’?

A go card is smart card used for public transport around Queensland, similar to a Touch ‘n Go card. The cost to the journey travelled is deducted from the go card balance each time you touch on and off.

What types of go cards are available?

There are adult, children, senior and concession go cards, where each differ in travel fares and expiry dates.

Adult go card holders must be 15 years old and above.

Child go card holders must be 5 to 14 years old.

Senior go card holders must have a current Seniors Card, issued by the Australian state or territory.

Concession go card holders can be full-time secondary and tertiary students, pensioners and Repatriation Health Card holders.

Where can I obtain a go card?

A go card can be bought at the Newsagent beside the UQ bookshop. A student ID is also required when making the purchase.

How long is a go card valid?

A go card is valid until you graduate. This information is accessed through your student ID when you purchase a go card.

What happens if I do not touch off?

You will be charged a fixed amount that is determined by your initial position of travel.

What are peak and off-peak hours?

Peak hours are from 2am to 9am and 3.30pm to 7pm weekdays, except public holidays. While off-peak hours are from 9am to 3.30pm and after 7pm weekdays until 2am the following day and all day weekends and gazetted public holidays. During off-peak, users are given discounts on travel prices.

How do I reload my go card?

Reloading go cards can be done at fare machines situated at various bus stops as well as at shops that provide this service. You can also refer to translink’s website for more information regarding how to top-up your go card here.

How can I plan my travel?

Travel planning is made easy by the Translink’s journey planner right at the homepage of their website, where you can obtain information about transport timetables, period of travel and where to stop depending on your initial and final position and when you intend to travel. You can choose from a selection of finding the quickest journey, the least walking, least transfers or no transfers, by modes of bus, train or ferry.

What are other methods of payment besides a go card?

 You can purchase a single paper ticket, which is valid for the first 2 hours of travel. However, the usage of paper tickets is more expensive than go cards.

Where can I check the bus/train/ferry status?

You can obtain the latest news and updates on transport status on the Translink website.

The Workshops Rail Museum allows you to explore history with hands-on exhibits, multi-media encounters and colourful stories of the railway and its impact on our lives. This museum is part of the Queensland Museum, and has won the Australian and Queensland Tourism Awards for Heritage & Cultural Tourism.
